This week in Costa Rica from The Tico Times

The #MeToo movement came to Costa Rica this week.On Monday, Dr. Alexandra Arce von Herold filed a criminal complaint against Costa Rica's most revered statesman, Óscar Arias. In it, she accused the former Nobel Peace Prize winner of rape.As the week progressed, more and more women came out accusing Arias of alleged sexual misconduct.  On Friday, Yazmin Morales, a former Miss Costa Rica, filed a second criminal complaint against Arias. The Tico Times has done its best to report on this topic in an ethical, responsible and transparent manner. Our Managing Editor, Katherine Stanley, previously worked for Arias during his second administration and offers English-language speechwriting freelance services. Even before these stories broke, Stanley had recused herself from any editorial decisions or stories involving Arias. This recusal continues. The Tico Times has helped break news this week, including the story of one accuser, Marta Araya Marroni. The Tico Times will continue to be an independent news source, free from outside influence, thanks to you and all our readers. As we've done since 1956, we'll bring you the biggest and most important news from Costa Rica. Thanks for reading,Alexander VillegasAssistant EditorThe Tico Times
